Boot Camp Beta 1.2 expires today

We’re not much into the Windows site of Intel-based Macs, but we know many of you are, and in case you hadn’t noticed this article from Apple, you really need to be using Boot Camp Beta 1.3 or later after today:

Boot Camp Beta 1.2 or earlier expiration

The license to use Boot Camp Beta 1.2 or earlier expires on September 30, 2007 (2007-09-30). Boot Camp Assistant Beta will no longer open after expiration.

To continue using Boot Camp Beta for Microsoft Windows on your Intel-based Mac, you’ll need to update to Boot Camp Beta 1.4, until Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is available.

Boot Camp Beta 1.3, 1.4 expiration

The license to use Boot Camp Beta expires when Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard is available to the public. To continue using Boot Camp at that time, upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.

That’s not a specific stops-working date, but the 1.2 date is—and it’s today. If you didn’t notice, now you know.

Did the 1.1.1 update “brick” your iPhone?

Even if, like ours, it wasn’t hacked in any way?

We promise nothing, but here’s a tip: make sure the iPhone dock is plugged directly into the USB 2.0 port on your computer, not into a hub or keyboard (even a USB 2.0 keyboard).

We had errors updating that required “restoring” the iPhone, and then the “restore” didn’t work, and then once we plugged and unplugged the dock, it started working but kept getting “disconnected” during the sync that restored all the files to the iPhone.

On a whim, we tried moving the iPhone dock from a second-level USB 2.0 hub (in other words, a 2.0 hub plugged into another 2.0 hub plugged into the computer) and plugged it directly into the host Macintosh. Bingo – no more problems, no more disconnections, sync and restore all worked fine.

We have no reason to believe that there are any power issues with the USB 2.0 ports we’ve been using, and this is only anecdotal evidence, but it’s possible that some driver got confused somewhere during the process (a printer plugged into the first USB 2.0 hub also stopped working until it was unplugged and reconnected to the USB 2.0 bus).

If you’re having trouble, it can’t hurt to try this.

What we learned after spending 20 hours repairing a server

It’s amazing how Mac OS X almost, but not quite, works correctly if /var is a real, empty directory and not merely a pointer to /private/var.

You would think “repair permissions” or an OS updater would detect such a mistake and correct it.

You would be wrong.

MDJ on Ringtones: reprinted at Macworld.com

Coverage from MDJ 2007.09.15 on copyright and ringtones has just gone live at Macworld.com, if you’d like to refer your friends to it. All MDJ and MWJ paid subscribers already have access to this, though—it was in MDJ 2007.09.15, and was made available immediately in the MWJ RSS feeds for MWJ subscribers due to the current publication delays. If you’re a paid subscriber and haven’t read it, grab a copy from the RSS feed; the ringtone analysis is only about half of the full issue. Another one is on the drafting board, too.

Tools we use: LaunchBar for $10

We’re probably a little late to this party, but we wouldn’t think of using a system without LaunchBar, and it’s on sale today for half price through MacZOT. Go stock up.
